In research recently performed at the University of California (Los Angeles), scientists have made a discovery that may shed some light as to why only certain people get acne. Acne is caused by Propionibacterium (P. acnes). They have found one strain in particular that could actually keep the skin healthy. This strain protects the skin much like probiotics helps to kill bacteria in the gut (Acne Bacteria Strain Linked With Healthy Skin Identified By Researchers, 2013).
The study had 49 participants with pimply acne and 52 participants with clear skin. The researchers found DNA of 66 different strains of P. acnes. Of the participants studied, about one-in-five had strains of P. acnes that were not on those with healthy skin. A strain, however, was found in those with healthy skin that was not in the skin of those with acne (Acne Bacteria Strain Linked With Healthy Skin Identified By Researchers, 2013).
The researchers are trying to formulate a probiotic cream for topical application to help block the bad bacteria from entering the skin and prevent the formation of pimples and pustules. We wish them luck!
