day spa

medi-spa

Spas are a great place for relaxation as well as taking care of skin care needs, but which should you choose a day spa or medi-spa?  Both offer similar treatments to a point, but there are some distinct differences.

Day spas are more luxurious and the ambiance is more for relaxation.  Clients do not have to spend a long time in the waiting room and the staff is not required to have a “medical” license”, but all therapists should hold a state license for their respective profession(s).  Treatments are geared toward temporary fixes and may include:

Facials

Seaweed treatments

Clay treatments

Chemical peels

Body treatments

Waxing

Massage

Teeth whitening

Electrolysis

Eyelash enhancement

IPL therapy

Microdermabrasion

Medi-Spas are facilities that are owned and/or run by a physician who either perform or supervise treatments.  Treatments may also be performed by a Physician Assistant, nurse or licensed esthetician.  Treatments offered at medi-spas may offer long-term solutions and may use sophisticated medical equipment such as Fraxel, Thermage or YAG laser.  Some treatments may be performed at other locations depending on the complexity and patient privacy.  Doctors who may have medi-spas are:  Dermatologists, Plastic Surgeons, Gynecologists, General Surgeons, Internists, General Practitioners, Neurologists, ENTs, Endocrinologists and even some Dentists and may offer the following services:

Diet supplements and diet plans

Acupuncture

Facials

Massage

Permanent Hair Removal

Liposuction

Laser skin therapy

Facials by phototherapy

Facial fillers (Botox, Restalyne, Juvederm)

Intensive Chemical Peels

Blepharoplasty (eyelid enhancement)

Rhinoplasty

Tummy Tuck

Microdermabrasion

Laser ablation

Scar removal treatments

How do you know which is best for you?  As with any service, do your homework and ask questions about credentials of the person performing the service as well as how long they have performed the treatments.  Doctors may attend a weekend course on a treatment where estheticians may have performed some of the same services for many years.  Get referrals from people who have had the same procedure/treatment you wish to have done.
