If you think Americans undergo plastic surgery at an alarming rate, think again! To make themselves more attractive for marriage and the job market, Koreans undergo radical plastic surgery to enhance their appearance. This poses a real problem if these individuals have passport pictures taken before the surgery. This makes for total passport confusion. In Seoul, Korea, more than 20% of women 19-49 have cosmetic procedures and others travel across borders from other countries to have procedures done.
Because the change is so drastic, these individuals have to carry a special plastic surgery certificate that lists the passport number of their original passport, the hospital where the surgery was performed and the length of their visit. It is reported that some individuals walk through customs with bandages and stitches still showing.
