Hydroquinone has been the gold standard for use in treating hyperpigmentation. It has been banned in Europe, Japan and many other countries. It is still used in the U.S. and Canada in product up to 2% for estheticians and 4% by physicians. There has been a lot of controversy linked to hydroquinone that the ingredient has carcinogenic properties (especially breast cancer, studies are ongoing). Five states in the U.S. has now joined the bandwagon banning its use: New York, New Hampshire, Montana, Massachusetts and Texas.
Have no fear, there are new skin lightening products on the market that are hydroquinone-free. Sales for these new products are expected to go through the roof, especially since Baby Boomers are heading into their retirement years (72 million). Look for these new products:
